2 Others Sit Out Exhibition Win

HARTFORD For UConn coach Jim Calhoun, Wednesday was supposed to be a night of answers, a chance to see how his players would look and function upon trading practice jerseys for white uniforms.

But only a partial view of the No.12 Huskies was available in a 106 67 exhibition victory over Division II American International before 10,770 at the XL Center.

Less than an hour before tipoff, the school announced that senior guard Jerome Dyson, junior guard Donnell Beverly and freshman guard/forward Jamal Coombs McDaniel would sit out “pending evaluation of recently submitted paperwork pertaining to their annual eligibility certification.”

In the cases of Dyson and Beverly, the release stated, the players “are not participating pending routine educational document review of eligibility certification.”

Coombs McDaniel’s situation is purely academic. He has yet to gain clearance by the NCAA’s eligibility center.

A source close to the situation said the absence of Dyson and Beverly was at the request of UConn, which is conducting a review of the men’s basketball program, or at least covering all its bases as it ultimately expects to have to provide answers to the NCAA.

The NCAA has launched a review of the UConn program in response to accusations of recruiting improprieties centered around an alleged connection to agent Josh Nochimson, reported in April by Yahoo! Sports.

Part of UConn’s review, according to the source, called for numerous players to submit documents, such as phone records, that would show there has not been a connection to Nochimson or any other unacceptable person.

“Neither of these players has been accused of anything,” the source said. “It’s just that [UConn] suggested holding them out because not all of their paperwork had been filed.”

UConn said in the statement that it expects a resolution to the cases of Dyson and Beverly “as early as today.” After the game, Calhoun said he anticipates both playing Sunday in the Huskies’ second and final exhibition game, against UMass Lowell at Gampel Pavilion.

During Wednesday’s game, the Waterbury Republican American posted a story on its website reporting that a request of documents from Dyson and Beverly was made by the NCAA, and that it centered around wholesale jerseys from chinathose players possibly having helped Nochimson recruit Nate Miles.

The Courant’s source said the document gathering has nothing to do with Miles and is simply part of vast, ongoing steps to assure every player is in good standing. The Republican American replaced its original story later in the evening, eliminating the reference to Miles.

Calhoun reacted to the original version to open his postgame press conference.

“So far off base unbelievable,” Calhoun said. “Just don’t knock on my door or ask questions of me again if you feel the need to speculate and throw dirt at us. If you want to do that, fine, if you have legitimate sources and ridiculous things. The university has already made a statement about what happened.

“If you want to write anything to get it out there, nationally, that’s great. I appreciate that. It really helps our recruiting and helps all aspects of our game when you speculate about something you have knowledge of and, quite frankly, couldn’t be farther from the truth. But maybe you’re right. Maybe it will be about something that I don’t know, but that’s not what the statement has said and that’s not what we’re about.”

Because Ater Majok (ineligible until December) and Jonathan Mandeldove (apparent academic issues and sitting out the first semester) were already out, UConn was left with seven scholarship players against AIC. Dyson, Majok and Mandeldove sat on the bench. Coombs McDaniel had to sit in the stands behind it. Beverly was at the XL Center but left before the game because he was ill.

None of it mattered against the overmatched Yellow Jackets. The Huskies grabbed the first 13 rebounds and led by double digits almost immediately. It was a freewheeling array of speed and power from three players in particular: Kemba Walker, Stanley Robinson and Alex Oriakhi.

Walker showed improved form on his jumper, made nine of 12 shots, scored 28 points and had 12 assists. Robinson (25 points) played well both in transition and in the half court set. He had an array of dunks, was finishing while fouled and made his only three point attempt, which gave UConn an 81 41 lead.

Oriakhi started at center and finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds. He displayed strong finishing moves, scoring on a left handed scoop and a two handed reverse dunk. UConn’s other center, Charles Okwandu, was largely ineffective and spent much of the evening with a very loud Calhoun in his face.

So the Huskies have pieces. When will they be complete? While Dyson and Beverly are expected back very soon, Coombs McDaniel’s case is more complicated. He attended multiple high schools and also has taken online courses, complicating his transcript. He spent much of this past summer at Tilton School in New Hampshire, finishing up high school coursework, before joining his teammates in Storrs in late August.
