Take a small peek into their lives back when they weren&#8217;t so well known:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-533\">Sidney Lanier<\/a> gained attention in the late 19th century for writings and poetry about his home state. The photograph below from the <a href=\"http:\/\/dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/vanga\/\">Vanishing Georgia Collection<\/a> captures him as a 15 year old boy in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-782\">Macon, Georgia<\/a>. In the years that followed, he graduated from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-1450\">Oglethorpe University<\/a> and served in the Civil War before embarking on a successful writing career. As a result of this success, he would eventually have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Multimedia.jsp?id=m-1541\">lake<\/a>, a bridge, and even a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-2357\">county<\/a> named in his honor in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/cgi\/meta.cgi?query=id:dlg_vang_bib180\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2265 size-medium\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 40px;\" title=\"Sydney Lanier\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/slanier-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Black-and-white portrait of Sidney Lanier.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/slanier-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/slanier-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/slanier.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Silent film actor Oliver Hardy spent most of his youth in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-769\">Milledgeville<\/a>, Georgia where his mother ran a hotel and he worked at a movie theater. The newspaper clipping below from the <a href=\"http:\/\/milledgeville.galileo.usg.edu\/milledgeville\/view?docId=news\/uar1908\/uar1908-0242.xml\">Jul. 21, 1908 issue<\/a> of the <em>Milledgeville Union Recorder<\/em> lists him as a first basemen in a Married versus Singles baseball game. Note the roster refers to him as &#8220;Fatty,&#8221; which was one of his childhood nicknames. He eventually left Georgia for a movie career in California and became one of the most recognizable actors in the history of American film.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fattyhardy2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2281 size-medium\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 40px;\" title=\"Oliver Hardy - First Base\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fattyhardy2-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"Program for &quot;Base Ball. Wednesday, July 22.&quot;\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fattyhardy2-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fattyhardy2-689x1024.jpg 689w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although not completely unknown in 1963, this <a href=\"http:\/\/dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/ggp\/id:y-ga-bs700-b-ps1-bg4-b1963-h64\">image<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-676\">Jimmy Carter<\/a> during his early days as a state legislator bears no hint that the &#8220;Farmer &amp; Warehouseman&#8221; from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-3280\">Plains, Georgia<\/a> would one day become the president of the United States (by <a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dresshead.com\/dresshead-staff-profile-anthony-nobles\/\">anthony<\/a> at <a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #333;\" href=\"http:\/\/dresshead.com\">dress-head <\/a>).
