Seals and his brother William H. Seals established the <em>Sunny South<\/em> literary magazine in Atlanta in November 1874. Each issue was made from newsprint and cost readers five cents an issue or $2.50 for a yearly subscription. The magazine struggled during the early months of its publication. Colonel Seals was forced to take out loans and sell his personal property to keep the publication afloat until subscriptions began to trickle in. Despite the initial financial difficulties, the <em>Sunny South&#8217;s<\/em> circulation continued to grow at a steady rate, reaching ten thousand in 1880 and one hundred thousand just five years later.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3391\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3391\" style=\"width: 195px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/atlnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/atlnewspapers\/view?docId=news\/ssw1899\/ssw1899-0175.xml\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3391 size-medium\" title=\"Colonel John H. Seals from the April 5, 1899 issue of the Sunny South<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Throughout its publication, the <em>Sunny South<\/em> focused largely on southern literature and each issue included short fiction, poetry, and serialized novels aimed at a female audience. In addition to fiction, most editions of the <em>Sunny South<\/em> included illustrations, household advice columns, and local news editorials. Politically, the magazine was consistently a progressive advocate for women&#8217;s rights.\u00a0 Associate editor Mary Edwards Bryan was a long standing supporter of a variety of issues related to gender equality, including job availability and coeducation.\u00a0\u00a0In 1895, the <em>Sunny South<\/em> became the first publication in <a href=\"http:\/\/atlnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/atlnewspapers\/view?docId=news\/ssw1895\/ssw1895-0024.xml\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3419 size-medium\" title=\"Sunny South, February 9, 1895\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/suffrageFeb1895-160x300.jpg\" alt=\"editorial from the February 9, 1895 issue of the \u00a0Sunny South\" width=\"201\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/suffrageFeb1895-160x300.jpg 160w, https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/suffrageFeb1895-548x1024.jpg 548w, https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/suffrageFeb1895.jpg 1040w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>Atlanta to officially endorse equal suffrage rights for women in the United States. In this editorial from the <a href=\"http:\/\/atlnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/atlnewspapers\/view?docId=news\/ssw1895\/ssw1895-0024.xml\">February 9, 1895 issue<\/a> of the \u00a0<em>Sunny South<\/em> (right), the unnamed writer asserts that women deserve the chance to be heard and suggests their participation could be the answer to society&#8217;s ills.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-1807\"><em>Atlanta Constitution<\/em><\/a> purchased the <em>Sunny South<\/em> from John H. Seals in 1893 and ran it as a weekly supplement to the Sunday editions of the paper. The <em>Sunny South<\/em> eventually merged with <em>Uncle Remus&#8217;s Magazine<\/em> in 1907. The new publication was edited by\u00a0 celebrated writer and journalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newgeorgiaencyclopedia.com\/nge\/Article.jsp?id=h-525\">Joel Chandler Harris<\/a> until his death the following year. The magazine continued publication under the direction of his son before folding in 1913.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Sunny South<\/em> is available online as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/atlnewspapers\">Atlanta Historic Newspapers Archive<\/a>.
