The book focuses upon the evangelical movement of the 19th century, and American attitudes on interracial relationships as demonstrated in the unfavorable, racially prejudiced reaction of Cornwall townspeople to two marriages: those of Harriet Gold and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiaencyclopedia.org\/articles\/history-archaeology\/elias-boudinot-ca-1804-1839\" target=\"_blank\">Elias Boudinot<\/a>,\u00a0and Sarah Northrup and John Ridge. Gold and Northrup were local white women; Boudinot and Ridge were Cherokee cousins from Georgia who were students at the Foreign Mission School. Both couples eventually moved to Cherokee Nation lands in the state of Georgia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4245\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4245\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/nativeamerican\/jpg\/krc146a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4245 \" alt=\"Letter, 1833 Sept. 22, Cassville, Georgia, [to] Wilson Lumpkin, Gov[ernor of Georgia] \/ John Ridge, page 1\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Letter-to-Wilson-Lumpkin-243x300.jpg\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Letter-to-Wilson-Lumpkin-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Letter-to-Wilson-Lumpkin.jpg 522w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4245\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Letter, 1833 Sept. 22, Cassville, Georgia, [to] Wilson Lumpkin, Gov[ernor of Georgia] \/ John Ridge, page 1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Elias Boudinot and John Ridge are represented in numerous materials in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galileo.usg.edu\/express?link=zlna\" target=\"_blank\">Southeastern Native American Documents, 1730-1842<\/a>, and Boudinot\u2019s work as editor of the Cherokee Phoenix, the first Native American newspaper, can be seen in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galileo.usg.edu\/express?link=zlgn\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia Historic Newspapers<\/a> collection.<\/p>\n<p>Both Boudinot and Ridge were supporters of the 1835 New Echota Treaty, which required the Cherokee Nation to exchange its national lands east of the Mississippi River and relocate to a territory in present-day Oklahoma.\u00a0 Their position was extremely unpopular with much of the Cherokee Nation.
