Carnegie Museum of Art.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Digital Library of Georgia remembers the life of activist, politician, writer, and educator Julian Bond who passed away Sunday at the age of 75.<\/p>\n<p>As a student at Morehouse College in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Bond\u00a0co-organized the\u00a0the Committee on Appeal for Human Rights, a civil rights group\u00a0that\u00a0successfully desegregated Atlanta&#8217;s public facilities.\u00a0In 1960, Bond became\u00a0a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee\u00a0(SNCC), where he served as\u00a0the organization&#8217;s communications director, and participated in\u00a0southern voter registration drives.\u00a0Bond later served in the Georgia House of Representatives for four terms (1967-1974) and then in the Georgia Senate for\u00a0six terms (1975-1987). He\u00a0was the first president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/\">Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a>, a position he held from 1971 to 1979. \u00a0After leaving the Georgia Senate, Bond served as\u00a0a distinguished professor in <span class=\"text_exposed_show\">residence at American University and as a faculty member in the history department at the University of Virginia.\u00a0<\/span>From 1998 to 2010, Bond\u00a0was chairperson of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacp.org\/\">NAACP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Civil Rights Digital Library provides access to numerous resources featuring\u00a0Julian Bond at <a href=\"http:\/\/crdl.usg.edu\/people\/b\/bond_julian_1940\/\">http:\/\/crdl.usg.edu\/people\/b\/bond_julian_1940\/\u00a0<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Digital Library of Georgia remembers the life of activist, politician, writer, and educator Julian Bond who passed away Sunday at the age of 75.
