{"id":7558,"date":"2020-06-17T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2020-06-17T12:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/?p=7558"},"modified":"2020-09-16T09:44:23","modified_gmt":"2020-09-16T13:44:23","slug":"sharing-columbus-history-in-early-columbus-georgia-facebook-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/?p=7558","title":{"rendered":"Sharing Columbus History in \u201cEarly Columbus Georgia\u201d Facebook Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Back at the end of April, during the early days of self-isolating (coronavirus pandemic), I was following a writer on a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Facebook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">g<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">roup called \u201cNostalgic&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nawlins<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;Memories.\u201d Every<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">day, this person, Derby&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gisclair<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, posts a New Orleans-re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lated photograph from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;past \u2013 with a short commentary. As I was trying to think of something I could do to \u201chelp\u201d during these trying times, I was inspired by Mr.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gisclair<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">thought:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;I can write, I do genealogy, I love local history (Columbus,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">G<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eorgia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), and I like research (retired Columbus State University librarian). I got the idea to post something every day on the \u201cEarly Columbus Georgia\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Facebook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;group&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I belong to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nstead of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">photographs,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I realized I w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ould use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;historic Columbus newspapers \u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;available&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to all from the Georgia Historic Newspapers site.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;And that\u2019s what I have done \u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;starting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on April 28, 2020, I began posting a \u201cToday in Columbus History\u201d piece on the F<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">acebook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;group.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7560\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7560\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7560\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ECGRiddle-300x296.png\" alt=\"May 1, 1856 \u2013 Ad for daguerreotypes by A.J. I usually do a \u201cBrowse\u201d search by \u201cCity\u201d and randomly go through th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e titles; t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hen&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I search<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the \u201cCalendar\u201d view. When I find an issue for the right date, I pull it up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Usually, there are four pages. I have the best luck finding articles and ads on pages 3 and 4. Early <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ineteenth<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">century Columbus newspapers basically had 4 pages. Page 1&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;usually&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">include&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a lot of ads and national news. Page 2&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;usually&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be comprised of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">politics and reported news from other places. Pages 3 and 4&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have more local stuff \u2013 as well as ads and legal notices.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I try to find a piece that I know a little bit about. I&nbsp;have to&nbsp;remind myself I am just writing a short blurb \u2013 I\u2019m not writing a paper for publication.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I try not to spend over an hour on each piece \u2013 although sometimes I do.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Footnotes are not required (although I do try to cite my sources \u2013 particularly for the pictures I use).&nbsp; I&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">try to keep the commentary to one or two paragraphs. Sometimes I go over. I get a lot of \u201clikes.\u201d The number of comments&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">may&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">vary from&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">five<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;or&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">six<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">forty<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">!&nbsp; There are many people in Columbus who&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have a much deeper and broader knowledge of Columbus history than I do. It is time-consuming,&nbsp;but,&nbsp;nerd that I am, I enjoy it (the tedious research part).&nbsp; Plus, what else do I have to do?
