On Passover, the people of Israel were freed from their enslavement to Pharaoh; on Shavuot, they were given the Torah and became a nation committed to serving God.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The word &#8220;Shavuot&#8221; means &#8220;weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/the-diaspora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jewish diaspora<\/a>, the holiday is celebrated by going to synagogue to hear the Ten Commandments, having festive meals of dairy foods, which may include cheesecake, <a href=\"https:\/\/motherwouldknow.com\/jewish-cheese-blintzes-for-shavuot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blintzes<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/reformjudaism.org\/jewish-holidays\/shavuot\/11-delicious-kugel-recipes-shavuot-and-beyond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kugels<\/a>, and reading the Book of Ruth.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/opinion\/shavuot-a-holiday-of-confirmation-opinion-668074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The<em> Jerusalem Post<\/em> just published an article<\/a> by the writer <a href=\"https:\/\/muckrack.com\/david-geffen\/articles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Geffen<\/a> on this holiday. Geffen notes that the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/sn85026946\/1868-05-27\/ed-1\/seq-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily News and Herald (Savannah, Ga.)<\/a><\/em> and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/sn89053728\/1907-05-20\/ed-1\/seq-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atlanta Georgian and News<\/a><\/em> both refer to the holiday as &#8220;The Feast of Weeks,&#8221; and explores the initiation of confirmation in <a href=\"https:\/\/reformjudaism.org\/what-reform-judaism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reform Jewish<\/a> temples in the United States. These confirmations were held on or around Shavuot. The article also includes engaging photographs held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebreman.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Breman Museum<\/a> in Atlanta.
