{"id":8286,"date":"2022-09-08T08:00:10","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T12:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/?p=8286"},"modified":"2024-11-19T11:13:48","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T16:13:48","slug":"crdl2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/?p=8286","title":{"rendered":"The Civil Rights Digital Library Relaunches With A New Look And Fifteen Years Of Updated Content"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>A premier online compilation of digital civil rights content is relaunching with a new look and thousands of additional pieces of history.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The milestone marks a new era for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/crdl.usg.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil Rights Digital Library (CRDL)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This project brings together more than 200 libraries, archives, and museums to provide free online access to historical materials documenting the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. These collaborative partnerships are the bedrock of this national project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>View the entire collection online at <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/crdl.usg.edu\/\"><b>https:\/\/crdl.usg.edu\/.\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbara McCaskill, an English professor at the University of Georgia who serves as director of the Civil Rights Digital Library and other projects, notes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince its launch in 2008, the Civil Rights Digital Library has played a meaningful role in advancing the understanding of America\u2019s civil rights activism at a time when upticks in racially motivated violence and crime and the erosion of voting rights have attached more urgency than ever to issues of equality, equity, human dignity, and freedom.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She says:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe signal achievement of this resource is its varied and unique content about people, places, and events. But it also challenges users to expand their knowledge of civil rights studies beyond national icons such as Dr. King and Rosa Parks, cities such as Atlanta and Birmingham, and beyond the 50s, 60s, and 70s to the present day.\u201c\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201dAs a result, the Civil Rights Digital Library continues to demonstrate a transformative impact on scholarship and instruction, as well as on how we carry ourselves as citizens and come together in community.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First funded by a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imls.gov\/grant-spotlights\/february-2009-civil-rights-digital-libraries-enhance-americans%E2%80%99-understanding\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Leadership Grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imls.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Museum and Library Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Civil Rights Digital Library launched in 2008 as part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usg.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University System of Georgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.galileo.usg.edu\/uga1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GALILEO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> statewide virtual library initiative. Along with these continuing collaborations, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dlg.usg.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Library of Georgia <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an initiative of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.galileo.usg.edu\/uga1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GALILEO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.libs.uga.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Georgia Libraries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, administers the site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, support continues to be provided by the following partners:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiahumanities.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgia Humanities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmac.libs.uga.edu\/pawtucket2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walter J. Many of these civil rights workers and foot soldiers may not be familiar, but their commitment to the movement formed the backbone of transformative civil rights campaigns and social reform.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiaencyclopedia.org\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Georgia Encyclopedia<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NGE) <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiaencyclopedia.org\/?s=civil+rights#:~:text=civil%20rights-,Articles,-(1474)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">articles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cover events and individuals associated with the civil rights movement in Georgia.
