{"id":8343,"date":"2023-01-09T06:00:40","date_gmt":"2023-01-09T11:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/?p=8343"},"modified":"2024-11-20T12:10:38","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T17:10:38","slug":"flannery-oconnors-appearances-in-the-georgia-catholic-diocesan-paper-the-bulletin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/?p=8343","title":{"rendered":"Flannery O\u2019Connor\u2019s Appearances in the Georgia Catholic Diocesan Paper The Bulletin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Daniel Britt, Mandy Mastrovita, and Donnie Summerlin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Digital Library of Georgia, in conjunction with our partners at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah, recently digitized the historic <em>Bulletin<\/em> newspaper (1920-1962) and made it publicly available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/\">Georgia Historic Newspapers website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Bulletin<\/em> was first published in January 1920 as the official organ for the Catholic Laymen\u2019s Association of Georgia and shortly became Georgia\u2019s leading Catholic newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>In 1963, the publication split into two separate diocesan papers, <a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/gua1189460\/\"><em>the Bulletin<\/em><\/a> (Archdiocese of Atlanta) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/sn22185748\/\"><em>Southern Cross<\/em><\/a> (Diocese of Savannah). Among the paper\u2019s vast array of content, it [still] includes reviews of Catholic written works.<\/p>\n<p>From 1956 to 1964, Georgia writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiaencyclopedia.org\/articles\/arts-culture\/flannery-oconnor-1925-1964\">Flannery O&#8217;Connor<\/a> regularly contributed to the paper\u2019s book reviews section. However, her first appearance in the publication was where she was credited as a budding cartoonist.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8465\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/gua1449731\/1943-06-26\/ed-1\/seq-10\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8465 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/flannery-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"The Bulletin (Augusta, Ga.) 1920-1957, June 26, 1943, page 10. Reporting on Mary Flannery O'Connor completing her first year of college at the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville Ga.\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/flannery-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.dlg.galileo.usg.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/flannery.jpg 613w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bulletin (Augusta, Ga.) 1920-1957, June 26, 1943, page 10<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stephanie Braddy, Director of Archives &amp; Records Management, Catholic Diocese of Savannah, notes that for O\u2019Connor researchers \u201cthe articles offer further insight into Ms. O\u2019Connor\u2019s wit and personality, as well as her firmly held beliefs related to writing, and Catholicism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well-known as a devout Catholic, she reviewed 143 titles spanning genres in both nonfiction and fiction, but, more specifically, she almost always explored Christian subject matter.<\/p>\n<p>As evidenced by her desire to review works by controversial figures such as the French Jesuit priest and scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, O\u2019Connor displayed a deep interest in increasing her intellectual engagement with Catholicism.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Davis, Director of Historic Museums at Georgia College &amp; State University, observes that : \u201cFlannery O\u2019Connor kept a very strict schedule during the last years of her life in Milledgeville.\u00a0 \u201cRising early to attend mass, she would then spend the remainder of her morning writing as her health allowed. With easy online access to O\u2019Connor\u2019s work in <em>The Bulletin<\/em>, the public and scholars of all levels have been provided another window to show how her faith and writing intertwined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These reviews were intended for a Catholic audience and focused on religious topics. As a result, they provide insights into O\u2019Connor\u2019s writing process not readily found in her works of fiction.<\/p>\n<p>In his introduction to Leo J. Zuber\u2019s compilation of O\u2019Connor book reviews <em>The Presence of Grace and Other Book Reviews by Flannery O\u2019Connor<\/em>, Carter W. Martin remarks, \u201cone of the pleasures. . . is to savor the quality of Flannery O\u2019Connor\u2019s mind at work on the serious intellectual content of her faith. Here is confirmation, if we need it, that her art arose from religious convictions that she subjected to intense scrutiny not only in her heart but in her mind as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below, we\u2019ve curated select pages from the <em>Bulletin<\/em> featuring writing by and about Flannery O\u2019Connor.
