The newspapers are now available on both the DLG\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/\">Georgia Historic Newspapers (GHN) website <\/a>and the Library of Congress\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/\">Chronicling America website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The newspapers include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/sn88063050\/\"><em>Atlanta Inquirer<\/em>, 1960-1963<\/a> &#8211; Founded during the Atlanta Student Movement in 1960 to cover the news of civil rights activities in the city.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/sn82015425\/\"><em>Atlanta World\/Atlanta Daily World<\/em>, 1931-1963<\/a> &#8211; The oldest African American newspaper published in Georgia&#8217;s capital and one of the nation&#8217;s first Black-owned daily newspapers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/sn84020323\/\"><em>Colored Tribune\/Savannah Tribune<\/em>, 1886-1943<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Founded in 1875, the Tribune, except for two hiatuses, is one of the longest-running African American newspapers in the South.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu\/lccn\/sn89077295\/\">Savannah <em>Herald<\/em>, 1946-1963<\/a> &#8211; The paper became of the voice of Black life in Coastal Georgia in the decades that followed the end of World War II.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These publications are invaluable resources for understanding the history and daily lives of Georgia&#8217;s Black residents during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras of American History. They are now freely available online and can be keyword searched or browsed by date.<\/p>\n<p>The project is part of the University of Georgia Libraries&#8217; participation in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/ndnp\/\">National Digital Newspaper Program<\/a>. NDNP is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress. The <em>Atlanta Daily World<\/em> microfilm was lent to the Libraries by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fulcolibrary.org\/aarl\/\">Auburn Avenue Research Library.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Georgia Historic Newspapers website is the result of a funding partnership between the University of Georgia Libraries and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.galileo.usg.edu\/\">GALILEO, Georgia&#8217;s virtual library.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Digital Library of Georgia (DLG) is pleased to announce that it has completed the digitization of several historically significant Black-owned Georgia newspapers with partial funding assistance from the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) grant.
