On Thursday, September 19th at 2 pm, join the DLG along with presenters Hannah Scates Kettler and Yasmeen Shorish, who will discuss the use of ethical and responsible artificial intelligence (AI) in libraries.

This webinar will cover the use of responsible artificial intelligence (AI) in archives and libraries and aid archives/LIS/GLAM professionals make ethical decisions when implementing AI in their work.

SPEAKER BIOS

Hannah Scates Kettler

Hannah Scates Kettler has been named the new associate university librarian for academic services in the Iowa State University Library. She has served as head of the Digital Scholarship and Initiatives (DSI) Department since 2019 and interim head of Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) since May. She is active in concerns regarding 3D creation and preservation, and diverse representations in cultural heritage collections and digital humanities about which she has published and on which she has taught and presented widely.

Yasmeen Shorish

is Director of Scholarly Communications Strategies and a Professor at James Madison University. Her work focuses on data ethics and management, privacy, and representation. She is a member of the DLF Advisory Committee and the ARL Fellowship for Digital and Inclusive Excellence Advisory Group. She previously served as the Chair for the ACRL Research and Scholarly Environments Committee that produced the research agenda, Open and Equitable Scholarly Communications.

Upcoming DLG Webinar: LSU’s Collections as Data: Encouraging Ethical and Computational Metadata in a Multi-Institutional Digital Library

The “Louisiana Digital Library (LDL) as Data” project allowed LDL institutions to collaboratively explore policies and practices for the creation of metadata that support collections as data.

During this webinar, hear about the technical and community-focused developments that resulted from the Mellon-funded project.

Leah Duncan will focus on project outcomes that connect to specific principles defined in the Santa Barbara Statement on Collections as Data:
 
      1. developments that support metadata quality;
      2. developments that support standardized terms of use; and
      3. developments that support ongoing ethical commitments to communities represented in our digital collections.
Attend if you are interested in learning about the LDL’s community-centered strategies for confronting the challenges of encouraging high-quality, ethical, and computational metadata within a decentralized multi-institutional framework.

About speaker Leah Duncan

From August 2019 to May 2024, Leah Duncan worked at LSU Libraries, developing resources and community around digital collections, digital scholarship, and special collections.

In particular, she supported the use of the Louisiana Digital Library (LDL), serving as Project Manager on the “LDL as Data” project, which was funded by Collections as Data: Part to Whole. In May 2024, she joined the team at Davidson College’s E. H. Little Library as Digital Humanities Librarian.

Duncan received her PhD in English from LSU, and she is soon to finish her Masters in Library and Information Science at LSU.
